Why the pliers matter

Opening rings by hand is what deforms them. Pulling the ends apart sideways stretches the ring out of round and it never closes flush again. The correct method, and what the included pliers are for, is to twist the two ends past each other in opposite directions, slide the ring on, then twist them back.

Done that way a ring closes seamlessly and can be reused many times over. Done by hand, most of a 200-pack ends up single-use.
