Placing them

Beads sit best spaced along a braid rather than clustered at the end, where the weight starts to pull. Slide them on while the braid is still slightly loose, then tighten below the bead to hold it in position, or secure it with a small band underneath.

Iron beads are heavier than aluminium, so keep the count moderate on finer braids. Take them out before washing — water trapped inside a hollow tube is what causes both rust on the bead and a mildew smell in the hair.
